Farm Markets have it all

At the Windmill, the Beiler family's pretzels are taken hot from the oven, made from freshly rolled dough.

What drives America? Entertainment and shopping. How nice to be able to combine the two into a phenomenon called agri-tourism, or "farm markets" to the layperson.

The first and largest rural farm and craft market in the state-and the No. 1 tourist attraction in central New York-is the Windmill at the northern tip of Keuka Lake near Penn Yan.

The Windmill brought life back to Yates County. The once depressed area pooled money, resources, talent and energy to build the Windmill in an old farm field. Now, the indoor-outdoor market's fresh produce varies with the season: lettuce, potatoes, tomatoes, peaches, plums and sweet corn in the summer; cabbage, squash, apples and pumpkins in the fall.

At the Windmill, the Beiler family's pretzels are taken hot from the oven, made from freshly rolled dough. Hand-hewn furniture, handmade quilts, dolls and baskets dot vendors' stalls. Made-to-order embroidery and leather goods are created on the spot.

Look for barbecues, oxen and horse shows, and antique tractor pulls. Glass blowers, antiques-a flea market. The attractions are endless.

What's more soothing than a replica of old-fashioned, small town Main Street? You'll bask in that ambience while strolling down Horse Shoe Lane at The Farm, a market tucked among the rolling hills and lush farmlands of Wyoming County,

You'll find just about anything you could want on this row of shops. Crave potatoes? Try the pancakes at Spuds Supreme. The Log Cabin specializes in custom-made oak and pine furniture and handmade quilts. Sample pear, pumpkin and apple butters at Molasses Hill Country store. Kramell's Meat Market sells its original apple sausage (pork, apples and spices).

The Farm attracts vendors who offer down-to-earth services like furniture upholstery and custom window covers, plus more frivolous joys of life like carved bird figures, doll house miniatures, folk art, aviation novelties and Native Indian jewelry.

Like the Windmill, The Farm is a great place for gifts, amusement and culinary recreation-out in the fresh air.
